There certainly cannot be a greater deed of bravery, heroism and selflessness than sacrificing your life for the sake of the safety and well being of your fellow men.
26 July 2009, a decade after 527 young men became one with the soil they worshipped, The Indian School of Business commemorates them on the Kargil Diwas. (http://isbweblog.com/2009/07/25/kargil-heroes-to-be-honoured-at-isb/)
Today's "The Hindu" had a picture of Mohini Pandey, mother of Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey who sacrificed his life in the Kargil war, inaugurating the Manoj Pandey Gallery at the Drass Sector on Saturday.Surely she is a proud mother and we all salute to every one of these brave men because of whom I write this blog in all safety. (http://www.hindu.com/2009/07/26/stories/2009072660441600.htm)
Having said this, and with all due respect to all these brave men, just one question. What if I were in a country where there was no need for a defence mechanism like an army or a navy and hence there was no need for army men and therefore, Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey and all warriors like him had been entrepreneurs, poets, artists, software engineers, management gurus or may be politicians.
Wouldn't that have made Mrs.Mohini Pandey happier?
What if there were no borders? There was no need for defence? There was no need to wall in or wall out anyone? And all the lines that we see on the world map just like that get erased and we only accept the division in land mass that the universe naturally made for us. And even that, not to declare a war but simply to know and accept.
Wouldn't that have made Mrs.Mohini Pandey happier?
I support patriotism. I appreciate affinity towards land that has been instilled in us from our younger days. I certainly respect this soil that supports me from birth to death. But what if I don't choose to just draw a map of a country and declare that my patriotism is restricted to this piece of land? What if I have the same amount of love for, say,Tokyo or say, Vietnam or may be even Islamabad. So what if I haven't set foot on that piece of land? I haven't set foot on Kargil as well. I haven't set foot on most parts of this country. But if I can be patriotic about this country, why cant I be patriotic about this world?
Wouldn't that have made Mrs.Mohini Pandey happier?
One disadvantage I see with erasing borders is difficulty in administration.
But cant I see many advantages with the disappearance of borders? To begin with, my eighth standard geography paper would have gone better. Next, I wouldn't need a Visa to travel around the world. We would all have known friendly souls all over the world. I wouldn't be worried about my friends and relatives in the US or in Australia or in Srilanka or in Kashmir and same goes with them. Finally, may be, the human being, Mr Manoj Kumar Pandey would have been alive today.
Wouldn't that have made Mrs.Mohini Pandey happier?
I am he woulde have been...
